AHPGA Student Selected in Queensland Golf Squad
Australian High Performance Golf Academy AHPGA student Matthew Melrose has been selected in the Queensland Golf Union State Squad. Matthew currently sits in fifth position on the Angus Buchanan Trophy Queensland Order of Merit with a stroke average of 72.07 ( this is the calculated stroke average leaders).
Matthew has been performing consistently over the past two years, in not only local amateur events but also overseas in his home country of South Africa. Just last December Matthew travelled back to South Africa to attempt to pre-qualify for the South African Airways Open. In the pre-qualifying stage Matthew shot a fabulous 5 under par score, which got him into a 6 man play-off. Unfortunately Matthew did not go on to qualify for the South African Open, instead finishing first ulternate ( this is the first reserve, so if a player was to withdraw from the tournament Matthew would take his place in the tournament). Even though Matthew did not get to play the tournament, he did have the wonderful experience of being able to practice alongside some of the worlds best golfers, namely Ernie Els, Greg Norman, Darren Clarke, Retief Goosen ( Retief Goosen spent 10 minutes chatting to Matthew on the range…..how good is that!) and current US Open Champion Angel Cabrerra. In fact it looked like Trevor Immelman was going to withdraw from the tournament at the last minute. If this had occurred Matthew would have been slotted into the grouping of Darren Clark and Angel Cabrerra…….that would have been a truly wonderful experience……..so close Matty!
All the AHPGA team and AHPGA coaching staff congratulate Matthew on his selection and wish him all the best when the final Queensland Golf Union State Team is announced this month.
