From Golf School to Tasmanian Golf Open
Stuart puts all his new golf skills to the test in the eighth part of this series. For other parts of the series see the links under the “Categories” Menu
This week Stuart, Matt, Bobin and Karl are in Tasmania for the Tasmanian Open.
At the Australian High Performance Golf Academy (AHPGA) we believe our students should test their golf skills at the high performance end of tournament golf as much as possible as a part of their continual golf training and development.
Before leaving for Tasmania we did some technique work, but Stuart and the guys are all swinging the club well so I don’t expect there will be any major issues.
We also worked on some golf targeting and skills testing, and then had the guys compete head to head against each other on the golf course and the driving range to sharpen them up for this week’s golf competition. This will sharpen all the guys up competitively for this week’s Tasmanian Open.
In these images you can see from the face-on view how Stuart`s setup for a bunker shot has changed from day 1 to day 21.
In the “Before” image (left) you can see how his spine is tilted to the right (notice how Stuart has set the right shoulder much lower than the left (as defined by the green line) , and the position and balance of the body is set to the right (as defined by the red triangle).
I see this set -up far too much when students first arrive at AHPGA. From this set-up Stuart’s had a tendency to make a big shift of weight back to the right on his backswing and then through.
With this unbalanced movement during his swing, he had a tendency to either hit the sand too far behind the ball (the leading edge digging in) or worse still to blade the ball over the green.
Too inconsistent.
In the “After” image (left) you see how Stuart sets up with a much wider stance, the shoulders and hips are more level (as defined by the green line) and the body is better balanced and the spine tilted slightly to the left (notice how the red triangle is now more centred) and the ball position is slightly forward of centre.
At AHPGA this is the method we teach all of our golf students.
This slight tilting left of the spine towards the target is a crucial part of the bunker set up and promotes a narrow swing path.
Stuart basically feels like he is lifting his hands and arms up and down while adding a slight body rotation to it.
With the spine tilted to the left and the weight positioned left throughout the swing Stuart can remain centred throughout the swing ( no big shifting of weight to the right) and by maintaining his original spine tilt he is able to contact the sand more precisely and really start to control where he contacts the sand and therefor control the spin and flight of his bunker shots through a variety of different ball and club face positions at set up.
