Golf’s Latest “Overnight Sensation”!
This morning 32 year old “Tour Rookie” George McNeill became the latest first time winner on the USPGA Tour with his victory in the Frys.com Open.
A 32 year old tour rookie?
I found his victory very inspiring and also very fascinating at the same time, so I decided to do some research on “Golf’s Latest Overnight Sensation”.
So is McNeill an overnight sensation? Actually he has been playing tournament golf as a professional on the mini tours of United States for the past 9 years!
This time last year McNeill wasn`t even playing tournament golf, he was working in a Pro Shop as an assistant! That was until he rediscovered his desires and passions to get out there and compete again, so he entered the USPGA Tour Qualifying School for the ninth time!
That`s right,McNeill had 8 unsuccessful attempts at qualifying for the USPGA Tour, until last December when he won the USPGA Tour Q School by 5 strokes!
Now McNeill could have hung up his spikes after missing out on qualifying on those previous occasions, but instead of thinking about it as “failing” he used these previous visits to the qualifying school as “positive feedback” and as a “learning experience”.
And the rest is as they say…….HISTORY!
There is nothing short term about playing professional golf for a living, there are many up and downs along the way, but if you can hang in there like George McNeill and keep focusing on what you want to achieve and never stop believing in yourself……you just never know!
PS..McNeill had already entered for the upcoming Q School for the 2008 USPGA Tour! With his victory today he has exemption on the USPGA Tour for the next two years!!!!
