High Performance Golfers Never Ever Give Up Attitude!
By Tony | November 25, 2007
I was watching the second round of the Australian Masters at Huntingdale on Friday, and in particular the group with Daniel Chopra of Sweden and our own Stuart Appleby. Both players started the day at three under after posting quality opening rounds of 69 and looking for a solid second round to position themselves with a chance to don the coveted Gold Jacket ( the winner of the Australian Masters recieves a Gold Jacket) . However thing`s did not go to plan over the opening holes.
Appleby hooked his opening tee shot into the left trees. He then hit a tree on his recovery and had to scramble for an opening bogie. Par`s on two and three were followed with another hooked tee shot and a resulting bogie five. Another dropped shot on the par three fifth and Appleby had now droppped back to even for the tournament and three over after just five holes of play on day two.
Appleby`s playing partner Daniel Chopra`s start was not much better. After hooking his opening tee shot left, he opened with a bogie five. Two more bogies followed at the second ( after three putting) and the par three fifth hole. Chopra was now back to even for the tournament and three over after five holes on day two just like his playing partner Appleby. Both players now found themselves eight shots off the lead, and the real possibility of playing themselves right out of the tournament.
Appleby was not ready to concede just yet, he proceded to birdie the sixth, seventh and followed that up with birdies on the tenth, thirteenth and fifteenth holes, with a lone bogie on the long par four eleventh. Out in one over 37 and back in 2 under 34 for a second round total of one under 71. Appleby shot 4 under 68 in Saturday`s third round and now finds himself just four shots behind and the real possibility of winning his first Australian Masters as he goes into today`s final round.
And what of Chopra? He proceded to birdie the seventh, tenth, twelfth ,fourteenth and sixteenth holes on his way back to the club house for a second round of 71. Chopra fired a sensational third round of 7 under 65 on Saturday ( needing only 23 putts!), and now finds himself leading the Australian Masters going into the final round.
Both of these guy`s epitomise the strong will, determination, commitment and `get over it and get on with it` attitude required to play golf at the highest level. They both were struggling and could have posted a score in the mid seventies, and with that lost their chance to be the Masters Champion of 2007.Talk about a bounce back, this is bouncing back at it`s absolute best!
So the lesson here - you are not always going to strike the ball as well as you would like everyday. On those tough day`s you have to hang in their and never, ever give up. Appleby and Chopra certainly didn`t, and one of them may even go on to win the tournament!
