More High Performance Golf Training at AHPGA
This is the part four part of the series that documents the progress of one student, Stuart, who flew from the USA to Australia’s Gold Coast for six weeks of intensive golf training at the Australian High Performance Golf Academy. For other parts of the series see the links under the “Categories” Menu
As we move into week 3 of Stuart’s training, let’s just take a minute to review last week. Stuart’s full swing improvement cycle is progressing nicely, and he works daily on his specific improvement drills.
At the Australian High Performance Golf Academy AHPGA we adopt an holistic approach to our training, therefore all our students are trained in THE 4 KEY ELEMENTS OF SPORTS
- Technical Skills Development
- Mental Skills Development
- Strategic/ Tactical Skills Development
- Physical Skills Development
At AHPGA we believe that it is important to be not only technically and mentally prepared to play your best, but also be physically prepared.
We establish this through a golf fitness screening process conducted by our physiotherapist from Golf Medicine.
This process involves the student being assessed for any previous or current injuries, skeletal weakness and muscle imbalances.
Stuart undertook this assessment on Saturday and a detailed highly specific stretching and strengthening exercise program will be developed for him. Stuart will be expected to work daily on this exercise program to improve his flexibility, Range of Movement, Strength, Stability, Function and to properly prepare for practice (warm up) to avoid possible injury.
Stuart trains 20 minutes daily on the Heart Math (EM Wave) Technology to improve and educate him in how to optimize his mental game/ emotional control and coherence levels on course for improved performance.
Last week on course Stuart played a number of 3/4 shots on his approaches to the green. This is what we have been working on with Stuart, so it was good to see him take it to the golf course under some competitive intensity.
Another area that we have been working on with Stu is to improve his wedge distance control and flight control. Stuart has a daily 60 minute routine where he works on a 3 swing distance control pitching exercise, we then take it out on course and put Stuart through a pitching conversion challenge.
In this challenge we record Stuart`s average distance from the hole on a specified pitching distance approach (say 90 yards) and the conversion rate (how often Stu get`s the ball up and down from the specified distance). This is a major part of the training at AHPGA.
On Friday Stuart played 18 holes of golf in the weekly AHPGA Competition. Play was from the black championship tees at Palm Meadows GC, and from the tees the golf course total yardage is 7200 yards!
With the recent rains and gusty winds the golf course was playing very long, and the flags were set in some tough positions.
Stuart shot 78 (+6), but his final score does not really reflect how well he played. The thing that impressed me was that Stuart was playing a variety of different flighted and shape shots, so it was good to see him being more creative out in the golf course.
This is the only way to learn how to play these shots, and eventually be able to execute them with total self belief and confidence.
60 minute putting exercise
Stuart felt like he ‘left some shots out there’, particulary around and on the greens. After the round Stuart went to the practice green and worked on his daily 60 minute putting exercise.
1 hour daily putting exercise;
- 15 minutes-Technique (alignment, path, rhythm etc)
- 15 minutes- Short putts ( up to 6 feet)
- 15 minutes- Mid range putts (7 to 18 feet)
- 15 minutes- Long distance putts (20 feet or more)
This week Stuart will continue to work on his full swing, pitching, bunker play, pitching, green side scrambling and putting.
In every one hour of training Stuart needs to practice the technique element 50% (30 minutes), followed by 50% (30 minutes) skills volume.
Then we test the new skill (3 in a row test) under some ‘on course’ competitive intensity by removing all training aids, selecting specific targets on the golf course, and going through his full pre shot routine to hit the required shot (eg. Stuart is working on a low fade flight) 3 times in a row.
I always want him to practice the way he intends to play his game of golf.
This is great for his confidence and his self belief to be able to eventually execute the required shot in the most intense of competition golf.
