High Performance Golf Training at AHPGA

This is the part three part of the series that documents the progress of one student, Stuart, who flew from the USA to Australia’s Gold Coast for six weeks of intensive golf training at the Australian High Performance Golf Academy. For other parts of the series see the links under the “Categories” Menu

stuart-top-of-swing-day1.JPGAs Stuart moves into his second week of training at Australian High Performance Golf Academy we are continuing to work on his full swing technique.

Stuart works daily on his specific swing improvement drills. His work ethic is fantastic.

At the start of every session Stuart trains (and hits shots) with a 7 iron fitted with a moulded grip. By using this daily at the start of every session Stuart is constantly fitting his right hand correctly on the handle of the club.

When Stuart first arrived at AHPGA his right hand was poorly positioned, rotated too far under and to the right. If you look at the image on the left (when Stuart first arrived at AHPGA) and the image on the right (taken today), you can see the improvements and swing changes currently taking place.

Notice how in Stuart’s top of the swing position before the current changes how his left arm is too vertical and out of balance.

We determine this left arm position by drawing a line, in this case the yellow line, up the original shaft plane line in the address position.

The left arm is in a balanced postion when at the top of the backswing the left arm is parallel to the original shaft plane line.

You can see how Stuart’s left arm is much higher, more vertical (red line). This also places the right arm out of position and out of balance (too high and flared away from the right side), and the club shaft position is upright and across the line (green line).

In the swing image on the right (current work in progress) you can see how the left arm is now in balance (compare the yellow line and the red line), the right arm is supporting the left arm (note how the right hand is now supporting the club better a the top, the right wrist is in a better position) and the shaft is now more on plane ( the shaft is still a little upright in this photo, and with more time and practice will be in a more on plane and balanced position).

After just 1 week and 2 days Stuart swing changes are progressing nicely, and he is really starting to compress the ball at impact.

This will allow Stuart to control the distance and direction better with his irons.

Stuart also works daily on improving his short game golf (around the green, putting and pitching) through improved technique and skills assessment training.

This is done at the short game area and also a lot of on course training where Stuart is tested and challenged daily to ‘raise the level’ of his short game. Stuart is learning the importance of a quality ‘defence game’ to compete at the highest level.

Tomorrow morning Stuart is competing in an 18 holes (from the championship black tees) golf competition rounding with the other AHPGA students.

The students play two 18 hole golf competition roundings weekly where all on course playing statistics are recorded and reviewed.
