    Physical Conditioning for Golfers

Gary Player was one of the first tour professionals to realise the importance of pyhsical conditioning in golfers.

These days, the modern players, lead by world number one Tiger Woods, train daily on their flexibility ( range of movement) and stengthening programs to maintain a high level of fitness as well as injury prevention measures.

Australian players, Adam Scott,Geoff Ogilvy, Stuart Appleby and Robert Allenby have their personal trainer on hand during the PGA Tour!

Last week I visited “X Factor”, the number one indoor golf health and fitness facility here on the Gold Coast, which specialises in physical conditioning and fitness for golfers.

X Factor Directors, Josh Meyer (Golf Specific Physiotherapist) and Marco Renai (TPI-Titleist Performance Institute Trainer/ Golf Specific Strength & Conditioning Trainer) are the dynamic team behind this great golf specific conditioning program, and with over 13 years of experience between them,I knew I could not be in more experienced hands!

First thing Josh did was check my swing bio-mechanics using the K Vest Bio-mechanical software ( Australian High Performance Golf Academy uses the K-Vest daily with our high performance players). In this assessment Josh is able to isolate specific areas of concern relating to the bodies range of movement in the golf swing and identify injury prone areas.

After this initial assessment, Marco and Josh put me through my paces with a physical assessment, where they assessed my current strength, flexibility and range of movement.

Through various TPI specific exercises they measured my current range of movement and physical limitations. These results were recorded, and after this initial assessment the boys formulated a comprehensive, personalised training improvement plan to improve my current range of movement, flexibility and strength.

What does this all mean to me and for my golf?
It will improve my`explosive power`- more distance!
It will improve my `endurance and stemina` through aerobic conditioning!

That all sounds good to me,hit it further with more power, endurance and stemina, but for me personally, the most important thing is-
It will allows me to play golf pain free, and give me longevity in this great game….which sounds just great to me!!!!!

Thank you Josh and Marco for taking me through the “X Factor” assessment and I thoroughly recommend all golfers, not just advanced players, take a look at their current physical conditioning and consider undertaking a physical fitness screening assessment as soon as possible.

All AHPGA Advanced Program students undertake a comprehensive physical sreening and assessment during their first week of training.
