Your First Week at AHPGA Golf Academy
This is the second part of the series that documents the progress of one student, Stuart, who flew from the USA to Australia’s Gold Coast for six weeks of intensive golf training at the Australian High Performance Golf Academy. For other parts of the series see the links under the “Categories” Menu
After sitting down with Stuart initially and discussing his personal goals and objectives we spent Monday and Tuesday assessing Stuart’s game via a number of performance tests and exercises, from full swing to putting.
We took some video footage of Stuart’s full swing hitting a variety of shots with a 5 iron, pitching, chipping, bunker, lob shot and putting.
Stuart’s main objective is to be able to control his flight and distance with his irons when playing 3/4 and 1/2 shots.
On Tuesday and Friday Stuart worked hard on his game from driver to putting.
We worked mainly on his full swing technique, focusing mainly on establishing a balanced set up and a balanced and connected move away and then setting the club on a balanced plane.
Stuart has a tendancy to start his back swing with his hands and the arms working back wide (note the tension in the right forearm) resulting in the arms and club being positioned too deep at the upswing phase of the swing (see photos and swing analysis below).
Stuart also played his first 18 holes around the Palm Meadows Championship layout on Friday, where after a slow start Stuart came home in 2 under 34 to score 76 (+4). The course played quite long after the recent rains and wind.
In the before swing (right photo) you can see how Stuart has a tendency to move the club away wide, note how the club head and hands are level, the wrists are locked and frozen, and the tension in the right forearm.
This was due mainly to the poor positioning of the right hand on the handle (rotated too far under and to the right).
The photo on the left is after the first week of correction training using specific drills and the Kvest Bio-Mechanical Analysis System.
We worked firstly on correcting Stuart grip and establishing a balanced set up. Note how Stuart is now setting the club earlier, low hands high club head (the hands have only travelled to hip height and the club head is up opposite the right shoulder and in a balanced on plane position) and the lack of tension in the right arm.
It is going to be a fun and a pleasurable 6 weeks working with Stuart, he is very open to learning and a very structured and dedicated young man. Enjoy the journey with us over the next 6 weeks.
