How The Target Game Helps Golf Training
Every day students at Australian High Performance Golf Academy (AHPGA) compete against each other in various competitive games in all areas of the game of golf from the full swing to putting.
One of our full swing games is the ” target game“, where we set up targets at a specific distance.
Let’s just say as an example that the target distance is 150 metres.
Target Game Rules
Set Up
We take the same set up as in AFL ( Australian Football League):
The main goal target posts are placed 10 metres apart, with the two outside posts placed 5 metres apart.
You can use witches hats, shafts or similar as your target posts.
Each player will hit 10 golf balls.
Scoring Procedure
You score as follows:
10 points if the golf ball lands in the 10 metre target
5 points for the two outside posts ( 5 metre target position left and right) and
minus 20 points for any misdirected shot, or a shot that comes up well short of the intended target.
If you hit a misdirected golf shot, you must regroup and bounce back as quickly as possible.
[This prepares you for a similar situation that may occur on course]
If you start poorly with two consecutive double bogies ( or two misdirected shots in the game), you must dig deep and bounce back.
By training like this, students develop not only your technical skills but also your competitive and mental skills. The students love these games as you are not only working on your techniques, but also your competitive and mental skills, and as high performance players you all love to compete….especially against each other!
Learn to – ” Get over it, and get on with it”!
If you were to incorporate this type of training in your next practice session, and not just stand on the range and hit balls aimlessly off into the distance, you just might be surprised that next time when you are out there on course playing, that you to can also dig deep in times of adversity and regroup and bounce back!
Until next time…..good golfing.
